Re-Used Interior Sets

Starship Interiors - Various Building Sets

Many sets used in Star Trek were later modified or even recycled without changes to represent a different starship or building. Here are a couple of examples. Please note that everything should be taken with a grain of salt. Certainly we are not supposed to watch closely enough to see that two different locations look the same.

Starship Interiors

Defiant bridge Unlike the rest of the Deep Space Nine sets, the bridge of the Defiant was not scrapped after the end of the shooting for the series in 1999, but was sawn apart and preserved in a warehouse. So it is not surprising that the set appeared once again in VOY: "Live Fast and Prosper" as the bridge of the "Delta Flyer", the vessel of the impostors. We can recognize that the basic structure of the walls is still the same, especially the sloped columns with the cut-outs for the lighting. The half-round pedestal underneath the captain's chair is identical too. The rear end of the set was completely rearranged, however, and overall the bridge was given a dirty and worn-out finish.

We could see almost the complete set once again in VOY: "Inside Man", here as the bridge of a Ferengi marauder with green as the new dominating color. The aft end was covered with a simple painted wall panel, but once again the overall shape of the bridge, including the lighted columns is as it used to be on the Starfleet vessel. The ceiling with the central dome is still the same too. It also seems that the captain's chair is standing on a rounded pedestal.

Not the complete bridge but just the Defiant's doors could be seen on Harry Kim's "Nightingale" in VOY: "Nightingale", and also on the Klingon vessel in VOY: "Prophecy".

Finally, the Defiant's viewscreen appeared on the Vulcan survey ship in ENT: "Carbon Creek" and on the Xindi-Reptilian vessel, such as in ENT: "Countdown".

Round gate A gate with a round cross-section and characteristic x-shaped struts outside the opening appears on the following occasions as a partial set: on the promenade deck of Deep Space Nine, on the Tsunkatse ship and on the bridge of a pirate ship in ENT: "Horizon".

Cockpit In the course of four seasons, three small shuttle cockpits appear on Voyager's screen which are obviously the same set, only slightly redressed each time: the cockpit Braxton's timeship Aeon, weapon dealer Kovin's cockpit and finally the cockpit of old Kes' shuttle.

Escape pod The Retellian and the Klingon escape pods are amazingly alike, although they look quite different from the outside (Klingon, Retellian). The full-scale set is the same, only that the Klingon interior was filmed in a way to look darker and less inviting, and without the manual controls of the Retellian version.

Various Building Sets

Big hall This set can be seen four times altogether, in TNG: "Masks" as Masaka's temple, in DS9: "Blood Oath" as the hall of the Albino, in DS9: "The House of Quark" as the Great Hall on Qo'noS and in DS9: "Meridian" as the hall on Meridian. A stairway with a throne is located at one narrow side of Masaka's temple. The same stairs can be seen again in the Albino's hall, but here the throne has been replaced with a door. The next time we see the set in "The House of Quark". According to the DS9 Companion only a part of the set was built up, obviously the one without the stairway that is missing in the episode. The hall was enlarged by adding lateral corridors. In "Meridian" the big stairway is not visible either. There are corridors on both sides again, and the hall was opened at one end. It is interesting to note that the matte painting we could originally see as Carraya in TNG: "Birthright" was modified to comply with the features of the 1:1 scale set.

Klingon hall This set can be seen twice. It is possible that parts of the above big hall were re-used, a set that existed two seasons earlier. The first time is in DS9: "Apocalypse Rising" where the hall is supposedly aboard the Ty'Gokor station. Note that curiously the Klingon emblem is backwards on the screen cap. For some reason this one shot was reversed. The second time a few episodes later in DS9: "Looking for par'Mach in all the Wrong Places" essentially the same set represents a hall in the legendary city of Qam-Chee, reconstructed in a holosuite. The pillars and wall elements remained the same, only the warrior statues were removed and the face side was modified.

Gaia set The set originally built to represent Gaia in DS9: "Children of Time" reappears in the very next episode "Blaze of Glory", here as an interior on Athos IV. The DS9 Companion confirms this finding. Athos IV is quite dark and misty, so the similarity is not too obvious.

Voyager cave set The cave set during the early seasons of Voyager was only slightly modified to represent different planets. Varying lighting and vegetation helped to establish distinctiveness though. Still, especially the entrance remained essentially the same.

The caves are seen (in chronological order) in VOY: "Tattoo", VOY: "Innocence" and VOY: "Blood Fever".
