Re-Used Props - Costumes & Badges
by Jörg Hillebrand and Bernd Schneider

Costumes - Badges or Jewelry

Many props of Star Trek were later modified or even recycled without changes to represent equipment for a different purpose or of another civilization. Here are quite a few examples of clothes and badges. Please note that every statement made here should be taken with a grain of salt. There is no need to seek for explanations. Certainly we are not supposed to watch closely enough to notice that galactic fashion is not as diverse as it should be.

Costumes

Slit gowns Harry Mudd was obviously very fond of the dresses that two of his three "love slaves" were wearing in TOS: "Mudd's Women". Two of his many android creations in TOS: "I, Mudd" are clad in identical dresses, namely the Maizie and the Barbara series.

Fur coat The megalomaniac people in the 23rd century have the same taste of grandiose fashion. At least Anton Karidian aka Kodos in TOS: "The Conscience of the King" and Fleet Captain Garth of Izar in TOS: "Whom Gods Destroy" are wearing identical coats.

Eminiaran bonnets The security forces of Eminiar VII in TOS: "A Taste of Armageddon" are wearing three different types of caps. At least two of them were re-used. They can be seen on two of the inmates of the mental institution on Elba II in TOS: "Whom Gods Destroy". It is well possible that the two are actually Eminiarans.

Barkeeper jacket The barkeepers in TOS: "Court-Martial" and in TOS: "The Trouble with Tribbles" are wearing the same glossy pink jacket (as if it were a uniform).

Triangular vest The Andorian Thelev, actually an Orion in disguise, is wearing a triangular leather or velvet vest in TOS: "Journey to Babel". The same piece of clothing can be seen on a human inmate of the mental institution in TOS: "Whom Gods Destroy".

Flower dress The very same green/yellow dress with a rose pattern can be seen on several occasions, each time worn by a woman of a different race and for some time in Garak's tailor shop too. This cloth pattern must be the most popular of the galaxy. The oddest appearance of the dress, however, is in VOY: "Prophecy" when Neelix and the Klingon woman Ch'regha leave it on a sofa in Tuvok's quarters after performing a Klingon mating ritual with its usual devastating consequences. We can see both of them step out in their normal clothes (although Neelix is obviously in disorder). So who brought the dress there and who put it on?

Police uniform The following races wear the same blue police or security uniform: the Rutians, the Vulcans, the Mari and the New Sydney authorities. Besides the decoration or rank signs only their emblems are different, and even these are often not original (see the Badges below).

Rutian emblem The Rutian badge from TNG: "The High Ground", composed of a number of rectangular semitransparent plastic parts, reappeared on the Boslic Jaheel's uniform and in the Delta Quadrant on Assan's racing overall. In DS9: "The Circle" the Kressari is wearing both emblems, the plastic rectangles and the postatomic triangle (see above). Note that on the auction item the central metal piece of the plastic emblem is missing.

Angosian emblem The Angosian badge from TNG: "The Hunted" was simply turned by -90° to act as the Hierarchy emblem on Star Trek Voyager. Tallera is wearing a smaller version of the Angosian emblem in TNG: "Gambit" which reappears on the Hierarchy uniforms of lower ranks.

Terrorist communicator The terrorists in TNG: "Starship Mine" had communicators with a stylized depiction of a reptile. This characteristic device was re-used for the Mari and for the Ledosian badge on Star Trek Voyager.

Sanctuary District emblem The Sanctuary District authority in 21st century San Francisco (DS9: "Past Tense") is using a black&white emblem composed of a stylized eagle and a seven-pointed star with the city emblem. The logo was re-used for the shoulder patches of the Mari security in VOY: "Random Thoughts", now in black and red. The Mari seem to recycle just everything they find in the Alpha Quadrant ;-).

Sanctuary District police emblem A typical star emblem like of many police forces on Earth signifies the police of the Sanctuary District (DS9: "Past Tense"). It is actually just a part of the above full Sanctuary District emblem in color. The Tandaran military is using an identical patch (ENT: "Detained"). The city emblem of San Francisco seems to have been obscured in the Tandaran version though.

Red Squad pin The Red Squad emblem appeared quite prominently in DS9: "Paradise Lost" and "Valiant". The Enolian security in ENT: "Canamar" is using the pin in blue.

Ilari collar While she was possessed by the consciousness of the Ilari dictator Tieran in VOY: "Warlord", Kes wore a collar with what appears to be an Ilari emblem. We could see the same collar in ENT: "Borderland", now around the neck of Orion slaver.

Enaran brooch An Enaran brooch seen in VOY: "Remember" is also used by the Lurian security (here slightly modified) in DS9: "Who Mourns for Morn" and by the Tarkaleans in ENT: "Regeneration".

House of Mogh emblem Worf is wearing the emblem of the House of Mogh until DS9: "Soldiers of the Empire" when he becomes a member of the (at this time more honorable) House of Martok. The Illyrians in ENT: "Damage" have the same emblem on their uniforms, although it is rather unlikely that one of Worf's ancestors adopted them. ;-)

Vidiian scripture Vidiian letters can be seen in Noss' binoculars and on the Talaxian Collected Works of Jirex and finally even in the Alpha Quadrant on the planet Dekendi.
