Star Trek XI Ship Classes
Federation Starships - Federation Shuttles - Alien Starships
Note This is a speculative page (obviously, at least until "Star Trek XI" is out). Still, it contains various spoilers. Whether we prefer to call the film a reboot or a prequel, it is definitely meant to be canon. As such, it would form an integral part of the Star Trek Universe. Yet, the redefinition of events and the redesign of essential parts of Star Trek's history may force me to disconnect the whole movie or parts thereof. Regarding just the starships, the internally and externally re-imagined original Enterprise NCC-1701 is bothersome. All other new designs could fit in easily into the history of Star Trek, and hence into the appropriate sections of this database.
Please visit Trekmovie.com to learn the latest news about the upcoming movie (I borrowed some of the descriptions from there), and discuss them at the SCN.
Constitution |
General
description This is the USS Enterprise as it appears in "Star Trek XI", probably meant to be the same vessel in the same configuration as Kirk commanded it from 2264-2269. Article: The Enterprise Refit of 2271 Constitution Gallery |

Annotations 1)
The side view shows a tentative reconstruction of the "new"
Enterprise, made by judexavier and posted at Trek
BBS. The saucer, the bridge dome and the nacelles are
extrapolations of what was visible in the trailer of January 2008, the
rest is speculation.2) The main theme of "Star Trek XI" seems to be a time travel back and forth through the 23rd century. As yet, we know very few about at what time(s) and in which configuration(s) the ship will appear in the movie. The only reliable information is that we will see Pike as well as Kirk in command. This may be at any time between 2254 and 2264, or at multiple occasions. The ship in the trailer may be the Enterprise's configuration when the ship was launched (probably 2245), and it may change throughout the movie. There are also rumors of a big-gunned battleship Enterprise in a parallel timeline. The locations for the ship seen in the film are: bridge, sickbay, crew quarters, corridors, engineering and the transporter room. 3) Compared to the pilot version (2254-2264) and the largely identical original Constitution class as it appeared in TOS (2264-2268) the changes to the re-imagined "Star Trek XI" vessel are substantial. Its proportions are similar yet not the same. The enlarged and "organic" nacelles are quite obviously totally new. The bridge dome is very different from the TOS model. Many details such as the lettering were modified as well. The interior of the bridge and other rooms are said to have been redesigned as well. 4) Overall, the re-imagined Enterprise would work very well if the original had never existed. An explanation along the lines "But the ship could have been refitted!" does not work, even if we ignore the ship's appearance in "The Cage" and "Where No Man Has Gone Before". We will almost definitely see the "new" (re-imagined) Enterprise in the movie under Kirk's command some time prior to the five-year mission or even in the very year 2264 when the mission begins. It is true that the re-imagination is more plausible as a predecessor of the Enterprise refit of 2271, but only as a direct predecessor. It would be very odd to build a new ship in 2245 with many of the features that the refit would have as late as in 2271, only to regress to a more basic style for just five years between 2264 and 2269. 5) Ironically, although they were more or less meant as reboots, neither the first feature film "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" nor "Star Trek: The Next Generation" denied the existence of TOS the very way it always looked. This applies especially to the appearance of the iconic original Enterprise. Its bridge was partially reconstructed for TNG: "Relics", without any concessions to the sophisticated techniques of the early 1990s. DS9: "Trials and Tribble-ations" went as far as exactly rebuilding the ship miniature and part of its interior sets; it even kept the blatantly primitive interface of TOS tricorders. In ENT: "In a Mirror, Darkly" a CGI version of the TOS Enterprise appeared along with recreated interiors. Another authentic CGI replica of the ship was created for TOS Remastered. With the redesigned Enterprise "Star Trek XI" breaks this unwritten rule and takes a revisionist course. See the original Constitution class. |

Kelvin type |
General
description The Kelvin is a Federation starship from a generation before the Enterprise and smaller than the Enterprise. |
Known ships USS Kelvin |
| Annotations 1) The Kelvin is of a new ship class never seen before. The ship is commanded by Captain Robau with George Kirk as first officer. Locations seen on the ship include the bridge (which reflects an earlier design than the Enterprise and is a lot ‘busier’), corridors, sickbay and engineering. 2) The redressed bridge of the Kelvin purportedly served to shoot the Kobayashi Maru test. The redress may have been done to insinuate that the candidates are supposedly not on the Kelvin herself and not on another ship of the same class. |

![]() Ground vehicle |
General
description This seems to be the 23rd century version of a 2-seated car. |
Known
vehicles No name given |
Annotations We can
see the car on spy shots of the Starfleet Academy set. It is not yet
confirmed whether it will really appear in the movie. It is a real-world compact
fuel-efficient vehicle named Aptera
that appears to be close to series production. |

General
description Nothing is known about this 23rd century vessel yet. |
Known shuttles No name given |
| Annotations Purportedly a set has been built for this small vessel. |

Academy shuttle |
General
description This 23rd century shuttlecraft, in service around 2250, is equipped with several seats. |
Known shuttles (Name unknown) 70172 |
Annotations 1) The shuttle can
be seen at a mining or refining facility on photos taken on a set of
the movie. Its general shape is in the tradition of the good old Galileo. I suppose
that it's a short-range type, and that the two pods are only impulse
engines or thrusters for atmospheric flight.2) My impression is that the shuttle on the photo is the same as the transport shuttle that belongs into Kirk's time at the Academy, as in the listing of the ship sets built for the movie. |

Time travel shuttle |
General
description This small Vulcan vessel from the 24th century is especially built for time travel. |
Known shuttles No name given |
| Annotations Spock uses a Vulcan ship specifically built for time travel. The ship is small and has a crew of one (Spock). The film features the bridge and also the ship’s "time core". It isn’t known what the name of the ship is, and it may be that the ship has no name. |

Romulan ship |
General
description This is a Romulan ship design from the 24th century. |
Known ships No name given |
| Annotations 1) The Romulans travel from the 24th century to the 23rd century in this ship, but it is not necessarily built for time travel. The ship is commanded by Nero. The design of its interior is apparently different than traditional TNG era Romulan design and said to be "surreal". No name of the Romulan ship has been mentioned so far. 2) Among the action figures and the new Enterprise a new starship was spotted at the International Toy Fair in Nürnberg: "It resembled an octopus and could have appeared in one of the Matrix sequels. I don’t think it was Romulan." Unless there are other aliens in the movie, this could be the "surreal" Romulan vessel though. |
